Heartland Park Touring Laps 2009
« on: Thu Apr 30 '09, 10:32:14 AM »
Yesterday was our second event this year, and I didn't think I'd be attending this one or any others after my last session. That was the first time I'd had the Clubby on the track and I was sorely disappointed. It didn't go well, it didn't turn well, it did stop well, but all in all I had a miserable time........I made one run and packed it in for the day.

Fast forward 28 days and Don has talked me into going one more time by telling me that he was taking his Classic Mini Pickup with the Honda Vtec motor that I'd helped him drive back from Georgia last October. I figured I couldn't miss that, plus I wanted to see how the Clubster stacked up against his little road rocket - I figured he was at about 12lbs per hp and I was at 15 so he should be quicker, especially down the straight. Plus too and also, I wanted to take a few laps in the P'up as well......

In the morning the weather looked horrible, there was a large thunderstorm cell over Topeka and it was raining buckets there, but as we don't run till 3 pm we thought we might have a chance if the storm followed the usual pattern for this area and moved off to the northeast. Sure enough, by 2 pm it had cleared Topeka and there was nothing to the west so we headed out - of course we got to drive thru the worst of the storm as it was heading towards KC now, but we broke thru sometime midway between Lawrence and Topeka and it was clear and dry from there on. The track had a couple of spots where there were some big puddles of standing water and a couple of spots where it was still running across the track, but we're on street tires not slicks, so while it's an inconvenience and you do have to be careful there, it wouldn't stop us from running.

After the driver's meeting it was decided that since the turnout was so light (30 cars instead of the usual limit of 60) they'd run the intermediate and advanced groups together, so that meant way more track time. I had decided that the reason the Clubster disappointed me so the last time was that I was driving it like I was in the '03 JCW, and it's a different car - the engine's a turbo with a lot of torque but not as high revving as the supercharged motors, and with the auto trans the shiftpoints are different - so I made a concious effort to start over and let the car teach me how to drive it, rather than try to force it into my pattern. Good decision as it turned out!

I don't know if it was the extra miles and the engine was just looser or what, but it definitely ran way better and I was having a ball. I was seeing speeds at the end of the straights as much as 18 mph higher than the last time! The car still rolls a lot more than the JCW, but the brakes are actually better, and I remembered to turn off the DCS. This had mixed results tho as like the '03 JCW did before I added the bigger rear sway bar, it wants to pick up the inside tire and smoke it out of low speed corners - the DCS would stop this at the cost of a slower exit. So I modified my line a little so I was a lot straighter coming off the corners to mitigate the spin and it worked pretty well.

In the meantime Don was having a ball with the P'up, we started at the back of the grid so we could learn our cars but within 2 laps we were passing people - it was pretty funny to see Don passing a 911 Carrera down the front straight - even the corner workers were remarking about it over their radios! We also passed a BMW M3 roadster and a Honda S2000, but truth be told, those guys were not running to their car's potential.

By the last session of the day we both were pretty comfortable with our car's capabilities and were running some pretty quick laps. Don was surprised to see how much faster I was in the Clubster than his P'up. I put it down mostly to brakes, with 10" wheels you can't get a lot of rotor and pad surface and in fact he was locking his rears on occasion, but when we drag raced up the front straight I was quicker there too, much to his disappointment. Still, he had a ball and the little car gets so much positive attention everywhere he takes it that it just brings smiles.......

All in all, a great day! I now feel a whole lot more comfortable with the Clubby on the track and I found it's a ton o fun to drive once I got it all sorted out. I'm going to see if I can find a rear sway bar for it and some summer rubber to tame the understeer a bit but I'm happy enough with the power and the brakes are, as usual, terrific. I got 10.5 mpg on the track compared to the '03 JCW's 8.1 too!

Great write-up, Dave! ;cl How many miles on the Clubbie's odo?  The MINIs seem to loosen up a lot after the first 10-15K miles.  Did anyone shoot film of you and Don on the track? :)

Only one pic that I can find and it's of Don on the back straight, I'll post it up.........

The Clubster now has almost 3k on it (since delivery 20th of Feb) and I'm not noticing any difference in day to day driving, so I'm not sure what to attribute my improved performance to, I hate to say it was me, but not forcing the car probably helped. I do know I was turning speeds at the ends of the straights and in the corners every bit as quick as the guy with the '08 I rode with last year, and he's an experienced driver.

One thing I wondered about tho...............last time when I got to the track I was down below 1/2 tank and I filled it up with 100 octane race gas (leaded of course) but I felt like the car didtn't run as well after that. When I got back to town I filled it up with regular to lower the octane rating and it seemed to perk up again. This time I simply ran good old street premium..........

Here's Don on the back straight at HPT, pedalling for all he's worth!  :bg

Dave, nice write up.  :ch

Did you run your Clubman with the stock MINI brakes?

How did the rotors and pads look after a day of lapping?

Don, I'm not hard on brakes...........and yes, stock pads and rotors.

My '03 ran thru 5 track days before I had to change the rear brakes, and 3 more before I had to change the fronts.

That said, I think the stock MINI brakes are amazingly good, I do change out the brake fluid tho to something that doesn't start boiling after 2 laps tho........ :er

The Clubster has bigger brakes than the '03 MCS did, so I can definitely tell a difference. Since I'm not racing for time, I'm sure I leave a lot on the table, but them I'm not out there to set records or use up my tires - just out to be able to drive really fast like I can't do on the street and have some fun. I think if I went any faster I'd have to start doing neck exercizes!  :bg

BTW, I'm still hoping to figure out a way to bring a bunch of KC MINIacs out to HPR to do a track event with the 5280 club this year. That track looks like fun on a bun! I've got 5 people firmed up already if we can get the dates synchronized with everyone's calendar.

Dave, you posted that pic of Don in the P'up elsewhere.  I meant a video clip. :)  And it is my understanding that the stock OEM brakes on the Clubbies are the JCW ones used on R53s - is that so? :sc

I think you're right about the brakes, Clo.............

Sorry no vid clips.

BUT................

I found out today that the 22mm H-Sport rear sway bar that I put on my '03 will fit the Clubster, so I'm going to swap the stock bar back into the '03 and put that on the Clubby! Yay, I don't have to spend for a new sway bar! While I've got it up on stands I'm going to see if i can make the 17" S lites fit too, then I won't have to ride the runflats till winter........

Well?  Did it all work out with the sway bar and the S-lites? :)

The S=Lites fit perfectly, although they don't have the TPMS sensors in them, so I have a small warning lite on in the speedo display, however it didn't seem to bother the car one bit over the 2k I drove the last 5 days. I definitely like the look of 17's better than the 16's, and I've always been very happy with the Kumhos on the '03............

Didn't have time to get the sway bar installed before we left on our Rushmore trip, but I'm off this week so I'll get it done sometime then........

I saw you went up Rushmore and had a blast with a lot of MINIs.

As for HPR, get those folks together and come out.  A few of the MINI5280 folks are getting together with the Lotus club for a lapping day. June 28, 2009 Sunday.

I think they have a few slots left with the Lotus club folks,  they opened the invite to MINI, Miata and a few others, so it will be a mixed bag on track.

HPR uses up brakes, so it is good you have a light touch.  I managed to get two laps in over lunch last Saturday. I was working corner 4, it was an interesting corner.

Here is a picture as the Big Bore racers passed and flew into corner 5 then downhill to 6.

It'll have to be later in the year, a few of us are going to the West meets East Mini Classic gathering that weekend, but I definitely want to drive that track. I watched a video of a lap back in early spring that showed all the elevation changes, off camber corners and great S's, looks like fun on a bun!

FOAB pretty much describes it. I managed about 110 on the straight before corner 4, then applied the brakes at the outer brake marker, you can feel your stomach drop on corner 5.

Have a good trip this weekend with the Minis and perhaps we can get some of us together for an open lapping day (Fridays at HMP),  check their online calendar.

October looks to have some open Fridays,  HPR Events Link

I'll bet I can get some guys to a Frdiay event more easily than the Wed's we're doing at HPT.

We'd probably have to drive at night on Thursday, but I think it's only 7 hours with the time change, if we left by 5 we're there by midnight - that's doable, and they're home by Sunday - this could work!

the way to approach this is just to pick the day and then start promoting the hell out of it till we get it done............

Sounds like a good idea,  I will check with Chuck MINI5280 and see if he wants to tag a Friday in the fall as a MINI day of Lapping as an activity.

Then you could push all the local buttons to see who would want to drive out as you suggested.  Could be a lot of fun.  :ch
