Not really. I got licensed about 15 years ago when I *thought* I would be getting a bike, but that never came to pass. I kind of got into them because a friend at the time was into them. He eventually morphed into all-bikes, all-the-time. I realized that while I can obsess about the machines themselves - as I do with cars - I wasn't as all-fired drawn to the actual riding. Not that it isn't fun, but I don't *NEED* to have a bike, and that combined with the added expense and risk have kept me from getting one.

I really like the more sport-oriented and race Hondas from the late'70s and '80s, though, and have a lot of Tamiya model kits of several of them.

Almost but not really. I have a Vespa. That's led me to some lust for real bikes though. My favorite around here is a vintage BMW a wine store owner named, coincidentally, Wally the Wineguy. Hopefully this thread will offer some good pics for the lusting.

If Pendergast enters he will have to plug Harleys or have his Wisconsin citizenship revoked. Riding any other in his state is about as impressive as my pulling up on a Vespa at motorcycle parking.

My wife wants one for the same reason.

Trouble is the ones I like are all from the 1960's and restored ones cost a fortune.

I hate the looks of the 'modern' ones......

Over the years I've traveled a lot of the country on bikes.  Starting in 1972 with a 350 Ameracchi Harley Sprint (one of the worst bikes ever made).  I moved on to 750 Hondas with  1974, 1976 CB 750's, then a 1980 750 Custom.  In 1983 I got a Honda 750 Sabre V4, and then in 88 I got a 650 Honda Hawk - not good for long road trips but one of my favorite bikes.  Under 400 lbs, powerband right where it was useful and handled great.

I sold the Hawk about 5 years ago and haven't bought one since, unless you count a Valkarie I took back to the dealer the day after I bought it and sold it back to him.  We settled it at a  $300.00 mistake  (luckily he hadn't sent in the license and registration yet).  I had a major brain fart when I bought that one.  :hh

Why haven't I bought another, I think about it often but I'm no spring chicken anymore, have some medical reasons and frankly the deer are so thick in this area I don't feel comfortable at speed anymore.  You never know though.

I am a bit scared of bikes.  To be honest getting my nursing degree did it to me.  I did several clinicals in the trauma department & WOW some doozie bike wrecks came in.  Did you guys know you can bruise your penis?  As in the whole entire thing turning into a dark purple swollen bruise  ;ft  Well you can.  It must be quite rare though because every single doctor in the hospital had to come into this bruised penis guy's room for a looksie.  Man I felt for that guy when they had to ween him off the pain meds  :no

I can't worry about that. I had a really good friend die (it will be 2 weeks on thursday) when a lady pulled out in front of him. S**T happens and sometimes it isn't your fault.

True. I'm OK not putting myself in a place for the S**T to happen to me. Sorry about your friend, Chris. That sux. A family friend (not someone I knew personally, but others did) was killed a few months ago. The curcumstances and fault were kind of vague, at least at the time, but it doesn't change the outcome.

SWiMBO is an Operating Room nurse, she tells me about various crash outcomes from time to time.

The vast majority of the time the results are amplified due to the riders' safety equipment. Or more, their complete lack of protection.

My absolute minimum riding gear is

Decent ($500+) helmet
Bike specific jacket with aftermarket back protector
Bike Specific armoured gloves
Heavy Jeans / Combats (I have a couple of pairs with kevlar protection.
Bike Specific boots - usually Sidi or Frank Thomas.

But more I feel that my attitude will help me to stay safer than the average rider.

I have taken a lot of training, covered a lot of miles, learned that I can stay safe if I follow the rules.

1) Assume I am invisible
2) Have a couple of rolling plans
3) Always maintain a couple of exit strategies
4) Ride within the limits of the conditions and my abilities
5) Ride unhindered by chemicals

I teach occasionally and take classes when I can - I learn something every time, in fact I feel that I learn something most every time I ride.

I have crashed on occasions, the last time was a super scary 140mph+  high-side, but the combination of my full leathers, decent helmet etc and the relative cushioning of the gravel trap meant that the majority of the damage was to my ego and the bike's cosmetics.

"Assume you are invisible" is the best advice a rider can follow.  I honestly think even if a car driver is paying attention it is somehow easy for your car trained eye to look right through a motorcycle.  I almost turned left in front of one once.  We both swirved & missed each other.  I swear I looked & saw nothing & then when I went to make my left turn BAM there he was.  I almost pooped my pants  :sh

Sorry about your friend Chris  :ks

One of motorcyclings biggest fallacies is 'Loud Pipes Save Lives'

Loud pipes do not save lives.

Decent training saves lives
Good rider skills saves lives
Self awareness saves lives
Riding like you frickin invisible saves lives
making spaces saves lives
exit plans saves lives
Riding 'straight' saves lives
Decent Helmets save lives

Loud pipes just annoy people, which probably COSTS lives.

SWiMBO  was recently called in to help deal with a 'situation' involving a motorcyclist that had crashed.

The background story is that he was drunk, very, very drunk and he had left a bar late at night or maybe early in the morning and made it as far as the freeway ramp, before misjudging the curve and crashing at about 50mph. He was wearing jeans, tennis shoes, a wife beater and a comedy skull cap as 'safety gear'.

From the ground up  his injuries where as follows.

Multiple fractures in his left foot essentially made it a total loss - but given that his ankle was ground down to almost nothing, the amputation was fairly easy.

His left thigh was skinned, to the bone, from his hip to his knee.

Both hands where also skinned - the back of his left had was stripped to the tendons, two fingers where also missing, his right hand fared better, only his palm was skinned along with his fingertips.

His left collar bone was broken along with a couple of ribs.

Finally his head, or rather his face......

His jaw bone was shattered and most of his teeth missing, his eye socket was shattered and his left eyeball pierced. Most of his lips where destroyed and there was very little 'chin' left.

Oh and his skull was cracked.

He was in surgery for many hours, the amputation and the pinning of bodily parts was simple, the scrubbing of his skin to remove the worst of the gravel took a couple of hours.

Reconstruction of his face took most of the next night. He was 'under the knife for around 19hr'.

His skull fracture required a number of 'pressure relief' methods to be used and basic reconstruction was incredibly difficult.

Long story short, if he had been wearing decent gear he would probably be sore and a tad bruised.

As it was, he spent three months in hospital and he is still 'recovering'.

Jeez, Max, after that report, I may re-think my Vespa dream!  :hh YIKES! :sh BTW, I assume I'm invisible to others when in my MINI and agree that it is imperative for motorcyclists to do the same.  :ny
