Black trim product test
« on: Sat Sep 12 '09, 04:08:34 AM »
I was looking through my detailing crap and noticed that I had several products for maintaining plastic. So I figured that I would give them a side by side run.

And seeing that this isn't NAM I won't have to gush about how great Black Wow is even if it may not the best product. I really don't feel like having OG get all butt-hurt that his product didn't destroy all others and have him try and give me instructions on how to "properly" apply the product. If I follow the instructions on the bottle and it doesn't work who's fault is that? BTW, I just watched this exact thing happen over there. I figured this could be informative, plus I'm testing some different products.

The first pic was taken just after the products had been applied, the second several hours later.
Starting from the left: 303 Aerospace Protectant, Black Wow, Prima Nero, Wizards Black Renew, Formula X (some formulation that Aardvarkalope made)

I will try and update this thread as the weeks go on.

Very cool Eric!

Any chance of seeing them in person tonight at say... 5pm at the Mazda parking lot before the run?

Nice job.  Want to see the results.  I used 303 in the past.  It works fine but doesn't last.  Never used Nero.  The max time I have ever gotten out of both  Black WOW & Wizard's is 3(ish) weeks.

My trim is now in such horrid shape.  It's practically gray if I don't apply something on it.  I have never in my life had plastic trim gray so bad & coincidentally I have never used any Black WOW, Wizard's or the likes on any previous vehicle.  I have a secret crazy theory... I think the Black WOW & Wizard's may make trim look better but I also think the products somehow rob trim of color & you get to the point to where you must use them.  I mean when I wash the MINI & run my mitt down the trim my wash mitt turns black.  So that black is coming off of something  :sc

One day I am going to say to hell with it & have my trim painted black  :bg

Yes I will be there tonight Joe.

That may not be a bad theory T. OG claims that BW soaks into the plastic, so I guess it could be possible for it to leech out color. I've never noticed black coming off on my wash mitt, but then I've also been lazy with putting product on, it's been like 6 months since I put any on.

BTW, I've never used Nero, Wizards or Formula X on my trim, only 303 or BW. I've had that Wizards since I bought the Prima starter pack, probably 2+ years ago.

I will say when I used 303 my trim wasn't fading at all.  The actual fading seemed to start when I first used Wizard's & Black WOW.  It could be coincidence as the MINI was a few years old when i started using them & my fading began...

Ok so it's been a little over a week now. Let's check in with the black trim product test already in progress.

In this pic you can see from left to right on the arch, 303, Black Wow, Nero and Wizards.

Here is a pic of all products in the shade, little easier to see whats happening.

Week one summary. One wash, living outside, no cover, no trees, warm weather.
303 - seems to be holding up well. This one is my top choice right now.
Black Wow - looks pretty bad now, blotchy fading. I think this one is done.
Prima Nero - still looking pretty good. I'm actually surprised by this one.
Wizards Black Renew - Looking okay. Has a little different color happening, possibly some sort of dye in the product?
Formula X - Faded evenly but still there. May fade quickly but stick around longer, we'll see.

If you want to see larger sized pictures you can see them here at my flickr account

I knew Black WOW sucked  :gs   NAM people kept telling me I was crazy & doing something wrong... bullshit... misapplication my big old ass  :yp & I swear WOW has actually ruined my trim but I have no proof...

I am shocked that the 303 is lasting that long as it hasn't with me in the past.  I am very intrigued with the Nero results & am wanting to give it a try now.

Thanks for doing this test & please keep it going as I am very interested in the results :)

I was careful to follow the directions on all of the bottles, if those don't work then who's fault is that?

My plan is to keep watching it till they are all gone. I just gotta remember to take pics more regularly.

For a little fun here is the cost breakdown of these products.
303 Aerospace Protectant - 16oz, $13 ~0.81/oz
Black Wow - 4oz $25 ~6.25/oz
Prima Nero - 16oz, $13 ~0.81/oz
Wizards Black Renew - 8oz, $13 ~1.62/oz
Formula X - unknown, I've got about 1.5oz and not exactly sure whats in it, but I've heard jokingly that it's around 0.06/oz.

Now OG will go off on the price comparison claiming that you don't use much so it lasts forever, well you don't use much of the other products either so that one is moot, also if you have to use multiple coats of BW to "properly" apply it you are using the same or more than the others. Also if you have to reapply weekly to keep it from looking like crap you're burn through it pretty quickly.

BTW if anyone wants to get rid of their bottle of Black Wow, I sold mine on the NAM marketplace in like 45min for $18 shipped, 7/8ths full. New bottles go for $25! I bet I could have gone up to $20.

I currently have BW and am not really impressed.... ESPECIALLY for the price.

I may try the 303.

I rarely pay attention to the "NAMers"... they are have polls up their arses.  :ne

Yeah there are a lot of people out there thinking BW is the best stuff since sliced bread, only problem is that they only listen to OG and have never tried any other products. He is making some serious money on those tiny bottles.

I may try the 303.
The nice thing about 303 is that it does rubber too, I use it on all my weatherstripping too, it's not all greasy, doesn't smell that good but it's not that big of a deal.

I rarely pay attention to the "NAMers"... they are have polls up their arses.  :ne
That is why it's so nice to not have any sponsor/vendors on this site, if a product sucks you can say it and nobody will beat you down for saying it.

A funny little note about OG, who has been detailing cars for the past 7ish years. When Marc (Aardvarkalope) was setting up and running 5 South Detailing, he got to know a bunch of people in the detailing community from asking questions and showing his work, a bunch of them knew who Marc was, and he was only running 5SD for a few months. When asked, none of them had heard of OG or Show Car Detailing.
Sadly Marc has since moved from SoCal up to Portland OR, land of rain.

I so wish you would post your results on NAM.  A few sheep might squalk  :yp but so what, it's an honest review & at least a few people might learn that there are much better products available than BW  :ny Plus, you might get away with the post as touting a Detailer's Paradise product (actually 2 cause they sell Wizard's also or they used to) & DP is a NAM sponsor also (a damn fine one I might add).  They just aren't obnoxious like OG  :bg

Looks like the 303. Nero, & Wizard's are hanging in there.

I'm kinda tempted to post it on NAM, but I think I'll wait till the end and just post the whole thing, results and all. Then let all the hate PM's come flooding in.

I agree Detailers Paradise run a decent business and aren't total dicks when you say another product is better. Seems like I've even heard Heather of DP say Zaino is a good wax system, she knows that it works better for certain colors, and isn't hurt when people use Zaino over Prima Epic.

DP actually sells Prima Nero, Wizards Black Renew and BW. Seems like they even sold 303 at one point, looks like they have thinned out the amount of different products they carry.

I did get several PM's asking why I was selling a bunch of my Prima stuff, I told them it worked but I liked the Zaino results better. Sold all of it.

I think the Forumla X is still hanging in there but it's shine fell off pretty quickly, I need to take a good look at the 303, in the pic it looks like the leading edge may be fading or it's just the lighting or something. But yes the obvious three top contenders are 303, Nero and Wizards. I am kinda glad that the Nero is holding up as well as it is, makes like the Prima line seem like it isn't too bad for the price.

Heather & Nick at DP are awesome.  They, like me , have an eye for the difference in a Carnauba shine over synthetic. They are awesome , always look for honest opinions, & freely discuss what's better whether it be the products they make or other products. I really learned a lot in my talks with them. On the other hand there's OG.... I quit posting my reviews & opinions in the NAM detailing area because I got tired of defending my opinion & what I saw with my own 2 eyes to him.

FYI... My waxing regime now consists if Epic topped with my fav carnauba.  I am a Prima fan just not a blind follower. I will say nothing on the planet cleans a window better than their product Clarity though :)

OG=Octane Guy (a.k.a. the Grand Poobah Detailing Sheep Herder of NAM)  :gi

I think I am gonna give Nero a try next go round :)  I do like Wizards but it doesn't last as long for me as it has in this test.  For ease of application though Wizards is my fav thus far (although as I said I have not tried Nero) :)
