Jeeping Ouray Colorado
« on: Sun Aug 09 '09, 02:06:03 PM »
Spent 2 days with a 2009 Jeep Wrangler X, rented from Ouray Mountain Adventures.  I'm really impressed with this vehicle, to be able to go on the highway, then go on gnarly trails, and it's factory stock!  The only thing in common with a MINI is the 6 speed gear box, reverse is down to the right, and it has 2WD, 4WD high and 4WD low, so that's 18 speeds... never mind.  :er

Here are some pictures from the first day:

Top of Corkscrew Gulch.

Going up to Hurricane Pass.

Hurricane Pass is 12,800 feet.

Oops, not a Jeep.

Cinnamon Pass is 12,600 feet.

Engineer Pass is 12,850 feet.

Long, slow descent from Engineer Pass.

Some rock crawling required.  This Jeep just walked down in 1st gear, low 4WD, no fuel makes the engine really use compression, brakes hardly used.

Not a good idea to be text messaging.  ;et

Stay tuned, day two had some REALLY gnarley trails.
My Colorado trip pictures.

My kind of trip!

Ouray has become a mecca of off roading and hosts annual get togethers of various crazed 4x4 groups. I'll get out there some day.

Thanks for looking!  ;ph

The second day:

This is a famous spot, even a MINI can get to it.  Note lack of guardrail.

A little further up is the famous hanging cliff, still could get a MINI to here.

The begining of the Imogene Pass jeep trail was steep and lots of bedrock.

On the cliff overlooking a large mine operation.

Following a stream, except for the waterfall.

Had to think about this climb for a second.

Imogene Pass is just behind the Jeep.

I'm going down, this Pinzaguer did really well with high clearance independent suspension.  The tourists were having fun.

This side of the tunnel has a view straight down at least 1000'.

You think the Dragon has sharp steep curves?  Hah!
Ate lunch in Telluride, and drove around a multi-million dollar homes subdivison, took a few pictures of course.

After lunch it was Ophir Pass.

It doesn't look like much now, but who knows what's around the corner?

Really no big deal, just steep and narrrow.

My fat lazy ass with the trusty Jeep on Imogene Pass.

It was fun to drive a vehicle that's totally different than a MINI Cooper, doing something a MINI can't do.  No wonder Jeep enthusiasts are as dedicated to the Jeep marque as we are to ours.

Did the rental place a CB or some type of radio in the Jeep? The "wheelers" usually stay in constant contact when in the trail so they know if something is coming-like along that narrow single track.  Great photo's- for an guy from flat and swampy eastern NC I love the west and how wide open it is.

MDK:  I asked if cell phone coverage is okay, not!  Have to rely on people to help, which is more likely in the backcountry than the city.

Thanks Max, I'm ready to do Moab a.s.a.p.

jst4fun: they rent the 4 doors too, but I was glad to have a short wheelbase on some of the hairpin turns.

Whew, good thing that Pinzgauer wasn't coning the other direction in the middle of the single track-I'd hate to back down that stretch!

I completely understand.
Before the MINI I had a Jeep. Met my hubby through a Jeep club.
Now I have my MINI but work for a Jeep enthusiast company that sells aftermarket parts and accessories for off-roading.
The hubby still has his Jeep though. He still goes out on occasion:

Kurt, that looks like a blast.  :hb  You have a some you know what to be driving on those roads.  I'd be the first to admit I'd chicken out at those heights.   :bg

The rental co comment reminded me of when I had a rental jeep-I was re-ended about 5 years ago and while my car was in the shop I had a rental provided-when I went to pick up my rental not much was availible but there was a Jeep that I was happy to take for the 2 days that my car was in th shop. It was fun and as this was winter-which is rainy for us- I "found" some muddy areas to explore so when I returned the Jeep I got a few looks and the guy chuckled when he asked if everything was Ok with rental.

This view is from the drivers seat:

When passing another rental Jeep, a woman timidly asked if it's not so steep ahead.  I grinned, and enthusiastically said "heck no!"  Her husband had an evil laugh.  ;mx
