Motoringfile are reporting that the 'just greenlit' Mini Coupe may be called the Broadspeed.

So I kinda don't get it.  At first it sounds like they are going to offer a 2 seater.  Then they say they are offering this Broadspeed in Coupe (Cooper, Cooper S and JCW form) & Speedster.  Plus it's going to be based on the R57 so WTH will be the difference in a Coupe Broadspeed & a Cabrio  :dk  Are they simply saying they will be offering a MINI with no back seat in 4 versions >> slower to faster?

I would be more exctied about it if they decided not to base the Broadspeed on the R57 (especially suspension-wise) & instead go back to the better handling/cornering 1st generation suspension  :ny

Until they do something to actual improve the handling back closer to Gen One I am not interested & happy with my R52...

I really like the idea of the speedster.....

As for the handling, SDMike has a very sorted R56, so i assume that it can be tweaked, his certainly lost the comedy ride height.......

Yeah there's nothing like paying a lot of money for a MINI then paying even more to rework the suspension &/or gut & install a new one when MINI should have/could have just gotten it right the first time... like they used to...

I will reserve judgment until this car actually comes out but if it's R57 suspension in addition to having a turbo, that would just be a nogo for me.

Hmm, I read a little about this last week and almost posted an article about it.  I'm just not convinced that it will really see production.  BMW is killing pet projects left and right.

R57 is the new Cabrio right? How is the suspension different from the R55/R56?

Say what you will about the R53, but an awful lot of people have resorted to changing them too. I like the ride quality of my Clubster v. my R53, and I find it just as fast at HPT as my JCW, but an inifinitely better ride on a long trip or on potholed urban streets.

The R57 is the cabrio & the suspension is the same as the R56 which for me is the problem.  I did not buy my MINI to get a smooth riding, cruising around, street vehicle.  I bought it for it's go-kart cornering abilities & feel of the road fun which have been greatly diminished in the 2nd Gen suspension.  The 2nd Gen handle & ride like an everyday car, Toyota, Honda, etc...  If that's your thing I am glad for you but it's just not mine so for me if this new Broadspeed gets built & the suspension is the R55/R56/R57 one I would just rather buy an used R52/R53 than spend even more money for a car that doesn't handle as well as the one I currently have :)

My point was that I don't feel like I lost any of the "go kart like" handling in my Clubby, and I definitely got a significant improvement in roadability. I base my conclusions on time spent on track at HPT road course with both cars, and on real world driving on two long trips I've taken this year as well as my daily commute. The R55 drives nicely, handles every bit as well and doesn't beat me up. I don't believe you have to slam the car down and make it ride like a rock to get good handling.

Part of the improvements in the R55/56 came from using aluminum suspension peices instead of steel, for less unsprung weight, which allows a slightly softer spring and shock combination without giving away any control.

Most people who have driven them comment on the smoothness and roadability of current Ferraris, for example and they don't ride like rocks either, yet I doubt you'd find much not to like in their handling........

There are a lot of factors in the "handling" equation and not everyone finds the same benefits in the same car, so definitely to each his own, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at an R56 based on the one car you drove that you didn't like. You were very unhappy with your new tires right after you got them, how are they doing these days? Did they get better, or did you acclimate to them?

I have driven a clubby for a day.  I test drove a manual R56 turbo & put it through some hard cornering.  I have driven an R56 turbo automatic for an entire week.  I hate the way they handle.  They handle nothing like my R52.  They float through a curve.  The ride feels like something a Camry would produce.  In fact the week I had the R56 loaner I kept having to remind myself I was in a MINI not a Honda or Toyota because from the inside that's how it felt.  The only time I felt like I was in a MINI that week was when I got out & looked at the exterior.

I am glad you like the new MINI ride (or I should say BMW ride) of the 2nd GEN. That works well for you since that is what they are selling now.  For me, they took everything that I love about my MINI & threw it away no amount of telling me it's better will make it so for me.  For me to be happy with the ride of a ne MINI the entire suspension would have to be swapped out which I find a bit cost prohibitive.

My new(ish) tires... I still hate them & think they are shit.  I will never ever ever in my life put any set of Kumho tires on any vehicle I own in the future.  Yes I have adjusted my driving style to accommodate when the Kumhos start sliding (which is constantly) but I have lost a lot of the fun factor when I drive & cannot wait til they wear out so I can get some Goodyears back on.  I guess that's a good analogy for the 1st GEN suspension vs 2nd GEN in my eyes... sure I could adjust my driving style so I could live with anything but why should I compromise when I can still have maximum fun with what I like :)

I'm not sure about the headlights.  They look like they belong on a Toyota. :er

That's just one of the things I don't like.

OK, I know this is just a concept right now but the black trim barely works on existing models.  But on a coupe like this, it's just a joke.  The windscreen is so flat that it makes the car look like a fast pice of soap.  MINI either needs to make this car look a lot more like the current line, or nearly identical to the original.

And MINI, if you're listening PLEASE DON'T MAKE THIS A CONVERTIBLE!!!  One is enough.

Good point about the black trim.  I wish I'd painted mine.  Maybe I will at some point.

At least your car is black, so it doesn't stand out as much.  It also works on Pepper White.

The only thing that excites me whenever I see something about the MINI roadster is that it just means the BMW Z2 is one step closer.  Much like Bamatts comments about liking her R52 over the R57.  My wife preferred the BMW Z3 over the Z4.  While the Z4 is a better all around vehicle for the masses than the Z3 it does not have the sense of being one with the road nor the sense of speed like the Z3 had.

The more I see it, the more I like it.

I can handle the black trim - it is a throw-back or a nod to the bolt-on plastic arches of the 70's and 80's. Heck I loved the plain black Group 4 arches I ran to cover the 10x7 4-spoke revolutions on my racer.

The headlights look very Aston Martin to me - which is a good thing too.

I would absolutely rock a speedster or a broadspeed....
