Wheel Cleaner Gel - need quick 'how-to'
« on: Sat Jun 20 '09, 06:47:03 AM »
Greetings Detailers

At a MINI event I won a spray bottle of Wheel Cleaner Gel and need your advice on how exactly to use it to clean the rims.  Do I spray it on and then wipe with a rag?  Or do I spray the rims and then rinse with the hose?

I've scrutinized the label on the back and, unlike the Interior Cleaner I also won, it doesn't say how to use it.  Though this label does tell me this product may cause eye or skin irritation and that (Gasp!) no data available for antidote if swallowed. Obviously I'll keep my mouth shut when using it.

Thanks.

What I have read about gel vs. spray is that gel is meant for extra-dirty wheels or wheels with excessive brake dust (read: "MINIs"  :er). I have to assume you use it the same way...spray on, let sit for a minute, scrub with a brush, and rinse  :dk

What brand is it?

The general rule I use with new wheel cleaners is to test it first on a VERY SMALL area inside the drum.  I've seen some wheels get seeriously damaged by standard, over-the-counter wheel cleaners.

Anyway, the best way to use a gel:
Spray bottom half of the wheel and work it in with a tire brush.  Rinse.
Spray top half and work it in with the a-fore-mentioned tire brush.  Rinse.
Spray the drum and work it in with a long handled brush.  Rinse.

Don't EVER just spray a product on your car/wheels and let it sit.  This is how you get streaking.

Before you do any of this, let me know the exact wheel gel and I can give you exact directions.

OK, I'll look into this product.  It's probably the same stuff that BMW sells, just in a MINI bottle.  And if that is the case, it is Einzeitt.  Check back in a few hours...

OK, sorry to take more that "a few hours" but I had to make a few calls to find out what is in the MINI Wheel Gel.  It's made by P21S, so its a nice safe gel.  P21S makes a fine product, and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

-Spray generously on each wheel.
-Work it in with a SPONGE.  Make sure to wear gloves.
-Let it sit for about 20 minutes.
-Rinse.

Take some before/during/after pictures if you don't mind!

Greetings Aardvarkalope

Thanks so much for the excellent advice.  Will take pics when I next clean the wheels.  They got cleaned last week when I had da MINI in for service.

Aardvarkalope greetings

On Sunday I cleaned the wheels of da MINI according to your instructions.  It worked beautifully.  Here are before and after shots.  Tanks tons for the sound advice.
